If you are a rideshare driver, you should understand that although you are covered under these company’s policies; there are definite gaps in the coverage, particularly when you are in Period 1, during your driving shift.
Driving Periods
Here is a breakdown of the different driving ‘periods’ or ‘phases’ you would find yourself in as a rideshare driver (whether you're driving for Uber, Lyft, or another rideshare company). It is essential to know how you are covered during each.
- Period 0: You are off duty and have the App turned off. Your personal policy is in effect and covering you.
- Period 1: You are on duty with the App turned on, but you’re waiting for a ride request. During this time Uber insurance and Lyft insurance are limited to simple liability coverage. If your personal auto insurance policy does not include ridesharing coverage you are not covered during this time.
- Period 2: A ride has been requested, you have accepted, and are now en route to pick up a passenger. Your rideshare employer’s policy, whether Uber, Lyft or some other rideshare program, is now in full effect.
- Period 3: Passengers are now traveling in your vehicle. Your rideshare employer’s policy is in full force for the entire time they are in your company, from pick up to drop off.
